I have been reading a great book called Twelve Extraordinary Women by John MacArthur. It is about some of the more well known, but ordinary women of the Bible and how God used them to do his work. He calls women extraordinary because Jesus always treated women with respect and did not consider them second class citizens. Also there are things that women can do that men cannot do.
The first few chapters are about motherhood and what God expects of those whom He has called to be mothers. He gives examples of Hannah, Eve, Sarah, and of course Mary-mother of Jesus.
He does not call everyone to be mothers however, and he talks about other women where there is no mention of them being mothers, such as Anna, the prophetess in the temple who had been a widow for 87 years and only married for 7. I couldn't imagine that! Later he talks about Mary and Martha, who desired to be with Jesus and worship Him; there is also the Samaritan Woman; and Lydia, seller of purple. She was a business woman. We are actually studying this book for our Ladies Bible Study through our church.
Whether or not you agree with John MacArthur on philosophy, theology, etc..., this is a good read for some insight on these great women of the Bible.
